Meet Aleksandra Martinović, owner of two doctorates in the field of food biotechnology-microbiology

What do you do?

I owned two doctoral dissertations in the field of food biotechnology-microbiology. I am currently employed as the director of the first Center of Excellence for risk assessment in the field of food safety at the University of Donja Gorica.

I am also the dean and full professor at the Faculty of Food Technology, Food Safety and Ecology. I participate in the implementation of international and national research programs in the field of improving food quality and safety. I am the ambassador of the GHI (Global Harmonization Initiative) for Montenegro, the chairperson of the group for global harmonization and the team for scientific committees in the European Federation of Food Science and Technology.

How does your practice of science contribute to the wider community?

The focus of my research is the application of molecular-biological methods for the assessment of the microbiological population in the ecosystem of various food products and the pursuit of continuous development and innovation in Montenegro, with the aim of better integrating our country into the development plans of the EU. Together with a team of co-workers, I also discovered two new types of bacteria isolated from our traditional food products. Through the projects I managed, financed by the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA), we succeeded to conduct studies on the eating habits of children and adults in our population for the first time in Montenegro, creating significant data for the development of health preservation strategies and the welfare of the population of our country.

What motivated you to become a scientist?

My inspiration to do science is the result of curiosity and a aspiration to understand the world around us. I was particularly motivated by the opportunity to contribute to the society in which I live through scientific research and innovation. I believe that it is science that has the power to solve some of the biggest challenges facing humanity, and to be part of that process, contributing to new discoveries that can improve people’s lives, is an extraordinary honor and responsibility for me. I find inspiration in the mentoring and support I received from my professors and colleagues, from young people whom I try to deliver my knowledge. Motivation also comes from an inner sense of satisfaction when my work contributes to a wider understanding of an issue. Being in the world of science is a journey full of challenges, but also a magic that allows us to discover the secrets of the world around us.

What message do you send to girls who dream of doing science?

Whenever you ask the question why you need to do science, keep in mind that the world needs your imagination and passion. Through scientific research, you can ask questions that no one before you has found the answer to. I know that this road may seem long and difficult, but all these challenges will only make you stronger and smarter. Although it is difficult, the support of family, true friends, teachers and all of us in the scientific community who believe in you is never missing on that path.

Your curiosity and passion for science are the sparks that light the path of discovery and innovation. Remember, every great scientist started right where you are now – with a dream and the nerve to follow it. Keep asking questions, keep looking for answers and never let the fear of the unknown stop you. Go confidently and let your love of science lead you to new horizons. Believe in yourself, as I believe in you!
