A bicycle ride through the streets of Nikšić today marked Europe Day as part of the European Tour. The event was organized by the Municipality of Nikšić, the Ministry of European Affairs, and the NGO Biciklo.me, with the support of the EU Delegation, as part of the EU4ME project. Around 100 people of all ages made a circuit through the streets of the city beneath Trebjesa, promoting sustainable and eco-friendly modes of transport.
Stefan Bulatović, a representative of the NGO Biciklo.me, stated that the ride through Nikšić would cover 5 kilometers and that this is a way for the city and Montenegro to demonstrate their commitment to European values and standards, especially in the areas of ecology and sustainability.
“I hope the citizens of Nikšić will enjoy the streets being different than usual. We are used to streets full of cars, but now they will be full of bicycles. We want to show the people of Nikšić and all of Montenegro that bicycles are a means of transport and that our citizens should be able to use bicycles regardless of age, ability, and so on. The bicycle is a sustainable and eco-friendly means of transport, which embodies European values,” said Bulatović.
Vojin Striković, advisor to the Mayor, highlighted the importance of developing, promoting, and practicing healthy lifestyles on the path to EU membership. He emphasized that the Municipality of Nikšić, in cooperation with partners from the Government, primarily the Ministry of European Affairs and the EU Delegation, which also sponsors such activities, promotes those moments and elements we call European values.
“Perhaps the most significant European value we should consider and strive to promote correctly is what we call the Green Agenda. This involves engaging in activities that will contribute to making our environment cleaner, giving it the appearance and characteristics we desire if we want to leave a healthy environment for future generations,” said Striković.
