Gorčević with Reintjes: Montenegro is not looking for shortcuts to the EU

“Montenegro is not looking for shortcuts on the way to the EU. High standards in the Rule of law are the goal we strive for, not because of membership but because of building a better and more prosperous society”, said Minister of European Affairs Maida Gorčević in a discussion with the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Montenegro, Joost Reintjes.

With the expectation that the long-awaited election of the Supreme State Prosecutor will take place at the end of the current week, Gorčević pointed out that it was the establishment of a stable political majority that opened up space for dialogue and conditioned key appointments in the judiciary. This, as she said, unblocked our country’s European path.

She emphasized that the Government of Montenegro is strongly committed to accomplishing all the reforms needed to ensure that we become the next member of the EU by the end of the mandate. She informed the ambassador about the plans to implement the key obligations and tasks in the next six months so that Montenegro could soon move to the last stage of the negotiation process – the temporary closure of the chapters.

The minister thanked the ambassador for the support that the Netherlands provides to Montenegro,  specifically in terms of reaching high, but very important criteria and standards in the Rule of law.

Ambassador Reintjes welcomed the results achieved by the new Government, stressing that progress in the Rule of law is fundamental for the democratic and economic development of the country.

“As a country that has a very high degree of civil support for the EU integration process, as a full member of NATO, and a country that is fully aligned with the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU, Montenegro has a great opportunity that, with adequate progress in the area of the Rule of law, builds an economic environment suitable for attracting foreign investors and thus ensures new jobs and a better standard of living for citizens”, said the ambassador.

He said that Montenegro still has a lot of demanding work ahead in the negotiation process, but that it can count on the persistent support of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The interlocutors expressed satisfaction with successful bilateral cooperation and effective support of Holadnija in the process of Montenegro’s accession to the EU.
