Gorčević with Negyesi: Montenegro has the capacity to be the next member of the EU

Montenegro should take advantage of the positive climate within the EU, as well as institutional momentum and accelerate reforms and results in all areas, and Hungary will continue to provide strong support for its European integration, particularly during that country’s presidency of the EU Council in the second half of 2024, assessed at a meeting between the Minister of European Affairs, Maida Gorčević, and the Hungarian Ambassador to Montenegro, Jozsef Negyesi.

Minister Gorčević thanked for the significant support that Hungary provides to Montenegro in the EU accession process, which, as she said, is particularly reflected in the provision of expertise in several areas of negotiation. She expressed the expectation that Hungary’s EU presidency will be key to speeding up progress on Montenegro’s European path.

“The results we achieved in the previous two months confirm the strong determination of this Government to accelerate progress on the European path and ensure that Montenegro reaches internal readiness for EU membership by the end of its mandate. Through the reforms we are implementing, we primarily want to improve the quality of life of our citizens, but also to show our European partners that Montenegro is a reliable partner and a country that deserves to be the next member of the EU,” said Minister Gorčević.

Ambassador Negyesi welcomed the first results in the judiciary, expressing the expectation that Montenegro will continue to make visible progress in all areas through comprehensive reforms.

“I believe that Montenegro has the capacity to be the next member of the EU. It is up to you to demonstrate your will and commitment to European integration in action, through visible results. On the other hand, you can count on the maintenance of the strong political, expert, and technical support of the friendly Government of Hungary”, Ambassador Negyesi said.

The interlocutors exchanged opinions regarding further obligations and plans in the accession process, as well as the need for expert support in several negotiation chapters.
