Blocking the negotiations with Montenegro is not an option, strengthening the institutions is a condition for entering the final phase of the negotiation process

“Although a slowdown in the negotiation process has been noticed, its blockade is not currently on the agenda of the European Commission, but the importance of the urgent appointment of judges of the Constitutional Court has been emphasized in order to fulfil the basic prerequisites for the further development of institutions that should support the rule of law and the overall political system, as the basic prerequisite for entering the final phase of the negotiation process” is the summary of the meeting between the Coordinator of the work of the Ministry of European Affairs, Ana Novaković Đurović, and the Commissioner for Enlargement, Oliver Varhelji.

Minister Novaković – Đurović expressed her belief that the judges of the Constitutional Court will be elected in the Parliament, in the most transparent election process so far, and thus open a new perspective in the direction of closing the negotiation chapters.

Commissioner Varhelji confirmed that the European Commission remains a reliable partner on the reform path of Montenegro, and that it will continue to support the process of Montenegro joining the European Union with its full capacity, both expert and financial support. Finally, Commissioner Varhelji called on all political actors in Montenegro to recognize the current geopolitical moment and to strengthen the dynamics of this process by strengthening the rule of law system.
