PM Đukanović, EU’s Mogherini: Progress in accession negotiatons reflects Montenegro’s serious commitment to reforms

During the second day of his visit to Brussels, Prime Minister of Montenegro Milo Đukanović met with EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini.

The Prime Minister said that Montenegro is making dynamic and quality progress in the accession negotiations and that the results reflect a serious commitment to the reform process, with particular emphasis on the rule of law and economic development. He highlighted the importance of receiving NATO invitation and thanked the EU and its institutions for their help and support, as well as for the excellent cooperation in pursuing Montenegro’s strategic integration goals. In parallel, he reiterated that Montenegro, in line with its capacity, is sincerely and responsibly pursuing European policy and promoting the common European heritage. Speaking of the region, PM Đukanović said that Montenegro is trying to be a responsible neighbour and constructive partner in resolving outstanding regional issues, hopeful this is the best contribution to the democratisation and integration of the Western Balkans. The Prime Minister informed EU Vice President Mogherini about the situation in Montenegro in the context of political dialogue and efforts taken towards creating a more favourable environment for the upcoming elections.

EU High Representative Mogeriini pointed out that the progress Montenegro has made is extremely important, and that the European Commission will provide all necessary assistance to the country and the whole region in the integration process, expecting that during this Commission’s mandate significant individual progress will be achieved, thus o further encouraging credibility of the enlargement process in the Western Balkans, as it is an opportunity that must not be missed. She stressed that Montenegro is well positioned and expressed satisfaction with NATO’s extending a membership invitation to the country. She also welcomed Montenegro’s dedication to strengthening regional cooperation and supported the development of good neighbourly relations in the Balkans, as this dimension corresponds to the process of integration into the EU.

Mrs Mogherini welcomed the political dialogue in Montenegro, hopeful that the agreement will be reached in order to hold inclusive and democratic elections, which will certainly have the full support of the European Commission.

PM Đukanović and High Representative Mogherini agreed that the Berlin Process has encouraged hopes in the Western Balkans and given a new dimension to EU policy towards the region.

The Prime Minister also met in Brussels with Charles Tannock, European Parliament Rapporteur for Montenegro for talks on current political and economic developments in Montenegro and other issues.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Đukanović laid a wreath at Maelbeek metro station in Brussels in honour of the victims of the recent terrorist attck.
